The retirement of Hennepin County’s senior commissioner opened the floodgates for candidates seeking a seat at the county level, and a trio of candidates added their name to the ballot on the final day of the filing period for this fall’s election.
Six candidates are vying to replace Randy Johnson as the District 5 representative. Johnson announced at the start of the filing period in mid-May that he would not seek reelection to the seat he was first elected to in 1978.
Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel was quick to announce her candidacy following Johnson’s announcement, and additional challengers trickled in a week later before the final three added their name to the primary ballot as the filing period closed on May 31.
